Background of the Study (400 words)

Domestic violence is a pervasive social issue that affects millions of women worldwide, causing significant physical, emotional, and psychological harm. It encompasses physical, emotional, sexual, and economic abuse that occurs within intimate relationships, often in the home. The psychological impact of domestic violence on women’s mental health can be profound, leading to conditions such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicidal ideation (Miriam & Adebola, 2023). Women who experience domestic violence may struggle with feelings of shame, guilt, and low self-worth, all of which can further complicate their mental health.

The prevalence of domestic violence in Nigeria is concerning, with many women enduring prolonged abuse without adequate support or intervention. Enugu State, like many parts of Nigeria, grapples with high rates of domestic violence, yet mental health services for victims are often underutilized. Women who experience domestic violence frequently report difficulty accessing mental health care, owing to stigma, lack of awareness, and the absence of specialized services. The psychological distress caused by domestic violence can result in long-term mental health challenges, severely affecting the victims’ quality of life.

Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Enugu State is one of the leading centers for mental health care in southeastern Nigeria. The hospital provides specialized psychiatric services to individuals suffering from mental health disorders, including those caused by trauma such as domestic violence. Understanding the psychological impact of domestic violence on women’s mental health at this institution can offer valuable insights into the specific mental health needs of these women and inform the development of targeted therapeutic interventions.

This study aims to explore the psychological effects of domestic violence on women’s mental health, focusing on patients at Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu State. The findings will contribute to the development of mental health services tailored to the unique needs of women who have experienced domestic violence and help raise awareness about the long-term consequences of abuse.

Statement of the Problem (300 words)

Domestic violence has long-lasting psychological consequences for women, often leading to mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance abuse. Despite its widespread nature, there remains a significant gap in understanding the full psychological impact of domestic violence on women’s mental health, particularly within the Nigerian context. Many women who suffer from domestic violence may not seek help due to fear, stigma, or lack of access to appropriate mental health care.

At Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu State, a substantial number of women with mental health disorders are treated, some of whom have a history of domestic violence. However, there is limited research into how domestic violence specifically affects the psychological well-being of these women in the region. There is also a lack of specialized care or targeted interventions for women suffering from abuse-related mental health issues.

This study aims to investigate the psychological impact of domestic violence on women’s mental health at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu State. By identifying the psychological consequences of domestic violence, this study will contribute to the understanding of how to better support women who have experienced abuse and develop interventions that address both the trauma and mental health needs of these individuals.
